Famous Indian Fashion Photographer – Vikram Singh Bawa
Bawa was born in the capital city of Delhi on 16 March 1970. He moved to Mumbai with his parents at an early age and is now based there. He went to Green Lawns High School and graduated in maths from Elphinstone College. Bawa started photography as a hobby at the age of 16 but did work for a chemical firm when he was 18 years old. He had the support of his parents in his interest in photography as they were huge hobbyists too. Bawa first started shooting on a Yashica automatic camera and his father’s Yashica TLR. It was on these camera’s he learned the art he mastered and uses today.
Vikram Bawa now is an Indian fashion and advertising photographer with a name he has made famous by his own efforts worldwide. Bawa’s first photography assignment was with Rani Jeyraj for the Femina Miss India 1996. He has also directed a film called ‘Yahaan Gandhi Bikta Nahin,’ which was a short film on Gandhi and this went on to travel to different art galleries in India. He has worked for magazines like Femina, Verve, Hello!, L’Officiel, Elle, Hi Blitz, Marie Claire TheTechy, and Stuff. Bawa has worked for famous brands including Coca-Cola, Dove, L’Oréal, Reebok, Skoda India, Sony Electronics, Taj Hotels, Kingfisher airlines, The Leela Palace in Goa, FSP London, etc and captured Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Abhishek Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Karishma Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra etc. He has worked on and published his own Fashion Calendar on the theme of Draupadi in 2014 in Mumbai with stars like Kabir Bedi, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Evelyn Sharma, Shamita Shetty, Nimrat Kaur and many more. He opened a Solo exhibition called The Other Side at the Gallery Art and Soul in Mumbai on November 2012. He also had a Group exhibition called Articulate 2011: An Exhibition of Contemporary Photography in Saffronart, London in October 2011. Bawa’s work is held in the permanent collections of Priyasi Art Gallery, Gallery of Art and Soul, Mumbai, India, Jindal Art Foundation and Alfaz Miller Collection. He is called the “Master of Gimmicks” in the world of fashion photography which makes him a pioneer of a kind in his art.
Vikram received four international awards for his Leela Palace Goa hotel campaign and this was a first for any Indian hotel campaign to receive these awards. His fashion film ‘The Long Show’ was nominated for the International Fashion Film Awards in 2014 for categories of Best Art Direction and Best Music Nomination. He was named as, “2nd best photographer at the PMA International Awards held in the USA,” for his 3D photography. The images were part of a 30-country traveling exhibition and he became the first Indian photographer to promote and showcase 3D photography in the late 1990s.
As a photographer, Bawa has received many more awards. Masters Cup, Prix de la Photographie Paris, The International Color Awards, Spider Awards, Asian Photography Most Influential Photographer Award, PIEA Award and many more. Luerzer’s Archive has included him in the list of 200 Best advertising photographers for the year 2010-2011. In 2010 he also became one of the most influential people in the industry of Photography due to his risk-taking and strong business practices.
Vikram Bawa continues to keep up the strategies of experimentation and creativity that put him on the map in his future projects and says he will never stop.
